Note
Sonata Fantasia for Solo Cello, Composed specifically for the JERUS-IT-ARTS project, this Sonata Fantasia explores the cello as a meeting point between traditions, geographies, and musical languages. The work moves freely between classical formal thinking and a more rhapsodic, contemporary approach, allowing contrasting sections to emerge, dissolve, and transform without strict boundaries.
Western harmonic structures and gestures coexist with melodic infections and rhythmic ideas inspired by Eastern musical traditions. These elements are not quoted literally, but absorbed into the musical fabric, creating a dialogue shaped by tension, resonance, and timbral exploration.
Extended techniques play a central role in expanding the expressive range of the instrument, treating sound itself as a structural element alongside melody and rhythm. Conceived as a continuous journey, the piece places virtuosity in the service of expression, with the cello acting as both a solitary voice and a carrier of multiple musical identities.
