Note

Shattered Tent” is a poignant and deeply personal composition inspired by the harrowing experiences of my family in Gaza. Amidst the turmoil of war and genocide, they were forced to abandon our home, finding refuge in a makeshift tent in a refugee camp in the southern Gaza Strip. This so-called tent, a piece of torn cloth prepared by my father, offers little protection from the elements, exposing them to the bitter cold and unrelenting rain.

This single-movement piece captures the raw emotions and stark realities of displacement, loss, and the relentless struggle for survival. The cello and guitar, with their contrasting yet complementary timbres, serve as the perfect instruments to convey this powerful narrative. The composition opens with a somber, fragmented melody on the cello, symbolizing the abrupt and forced departure from home. The guitar soon joins with a rhythmic pulse, underscoring the urgency and chaos of fleeing from danger. Together, the instruments create a soundscape that mirrors the feelings of despair, vulnerability, and resilience experienced by those living in such precarious conditions.

As the piece progresses, the music becomes more intense and dissonant, reflecting the physical and emotional hardships faced by my family. The cello’s deep, resonant notes and the guitar’s sharp, staccato chords evoke the biting cold and the incessant rain that permeate their temporary shelter. Despite the overwhelming adversity, moments of harmony and lyrical beauty emerge, representing the unyielding spirit and hope that persist even in the darkest times.

Shattered Tent” is not just a piece of music; it is a narrative of pain, struggle, and ultimately, hope. It is dedicated to my family and all those who have been displaced by conflict, serving as a reminder of the human cost of war. Through this composition, I hope to raise awareness and evoke empathy for the countless individuals enduring unimaginable hardships in search of peace and safety.
